About
I am different. I overthink most of the time. I forgive easily even if I know I shouldn’t. I am not the most confident person you will meet, but I manage to keep myself grounded. I feel empowered when I have a camera in my hand. The power of that “click” can say a thousand words or evoke a thousand emotions all in one. When I get to dance, I feel free. I get to portray any vision I have in my head and tell it to the world. The stories you will feel and see in both art forms are more powerful than any sentence that could be said to someone. Power of movement and power of capturing that movement are two opposite things, yet they come together to present a vision. To have the ability to create something from nothing is a superpower. It is a superpower that allows any person to use their surroundings to say what they need to say without a single word. It creates a feeling of confidence that humbles your entire body because this is art and art is all your own. When I first picked up a camera, it was game over from the start. I instantly got hooked to the item as if I was a 3-year-old getting my first “convertible” car for Christmas. But it was no ordinary item. It holds the ability to capture a moment in time, and no one can truly tell you the importance of that capture until you see it in a frame on top of someone’s mantle for everyone to see. So far, I have had so many proud moments in my journey of pursuing photography. One time that sticks in my head the most is the first shoot I ever booked a shoot with a dancer. No, it was not the best work I ever did since that was a long time ago, but I will never forget the excitement I had in the fact that I finally get to work and grow.
“Why did I start dancing?” you ask. Well, I was very young at the time to truly understand what I was getting into, but it was worth every second of my time. I got to fully break out of my shell that I held over myself as a child. I got to meet and experience more things than I ever thought I would, but each one allowed me to find who I am in the inside. This art form is so individualized. It was unlike any other thing I have been exposed to, and it grew on me so much. It came to a point where I would never stop because I had a dream that I was going to pursue one day. I used to say my proudest moment was when I won national champion 2 years ago, but that isn’t it. The moment that puts a smile on my face is the memory I have one year ago of teaching my first dance class at the studio I grew up in. It changed me, and how I viewed what I was doing. I was no longer the student; I was the teacher, and having that title makes me so proud. I will continue to cherish that. I felt defeated numerous times trying to perfect this art, and any artist knows what I am talking about. The time I felt most defeated was when I had spent hours practicing for an audition and ended up not getting the part because I did not have “the look” they were aiming for. I felt defeated for the fact that certain things are not always based off your ability and going home realizing I wasn’t given any specific thing to work on to improve for next time just sucked. Getting over it was not easy at the time, but it changed my mindset about things in my own life and grew my mindset too. Being involved in both art forms is like matching two puzzle pieces together to complete the picture. The wholeness I felt in my life is unmatched to any other feeling I have had before. These activities are no longer hobbies and they are a part of me. A smile is formed each night I get to work on my passions.
